La definizione di mediana è la seguente : X½ per un paese significa che tra il 45 % e il 55 % ( cioè "circa la metà " ) dei suoi abitanti parla X + 1 lingua.
Ad esempio , 1 ½ per la Francia indica che circa la metà dei francesi parla due lingue: il francese più un'altra lingua straniera.
Il confronto tra le due mappe mostra alcune tendenze interessanti: Italiani e greci, per esempio, entrambi parlano in media 1,8 lingue, ma la mediana è 1 per l'Italia e 2 per la Grecia . Questo perché l'italiano medio parla una lingua, ma chi parla una seconda lingua parla, di solito, 3 o 4 lingue. La maggior parte dei greci, invece, parlano due lingue, ma pochi di loro ne parlano 3 o 4.
